Full-stack infrastructure monitoring begins automatically as soon as Dynatrace OneAgent starts operation and begins capturing performance and event-related information on your hosts. All monitored details are displayed for you on your home dashboard. Dynatrace updates your dashboards continuously with the current status of all hosts in your environment.
What's included in full-stack infrastructure monitoring?
Dynatrace evaluates the following components in the monitoring of your application infrastructure:
- Your hosts (CPU, memory, NIC, and storage)
- Host processes
- Network health
- Your virtual management platform (VMware vCenter or standalone ESXi hosts)
How do I set up virtualization monitoring?
To monitor your virtual components you need to complete an extra step beyond initial setup. For full details, see How do I set up virtualization monitoring?
The virtualization performance insights that Dynatrace provides tell you how the virtual machines in your environment affect the performance of your applications and services. Once you include virtualization in your Dynatrace performance monitoring, you gain insight into your complete infrastructure stack and its behavior. Your understanding of the performance and operation of your data center is greatly increased because you see the relationships between components such as ESXi hosts and, within large deployments, your vCenter platform as a whole. Dynatrace collects information related to virtualized CPU usage, memory consumption, and storage related activities. It also collects information about events such as virtual machine migrations (vMotion) and the creation of new virtual machines. Armed with such information you might learn, for example, that CPU saturation on one of your ESXi hosts is causing performance degradation in your application.
What is cloud infrastructure monitoring mode?
With cloud infrastructure monitoring mode, you only pay for and receive cloud-infrastructure health data, with no application performance or user experience data. While cloud infrastructure monitoring mode is satisfactory for some organizations, it's recommended that you use a full-stack monitoring license to gain complete application performance monitoring, code-level visibility, deep process monitoring, and cloud infrastructure monitoring (including PaaS platforms).
Cloud infrastructure monitoring mode licenses
You need to purchase a limited license to use cloud infrastructure monitoring mode. For details, see cloud infrastructure monitoring.
Note that you can also activate cloud infrastructure monitoring mode during OneAgent installation. For details, see How do I install Dynatrace OneAgent? and Can I perform a custom installation with command line parameters?
