Overview

GitHub Copilot Chat in VS Code ships a first-party OpenTelemetry exporter that sends traces, metrics, and OTel events for every agent invocation, LLM call, tool run, and hook. It emits OpenTelemetry GenAI semantic conventions (gen_ai.*) directly, alongside Copilot-specific github.copilot.* attributes.

Dynatrace ingests this telemetry over OTLP with no extension, plugin, or code changes. Point VS Code at your Dynatrace OTLP endpoint and Copilot Chat activity appears in the AI Observability app: models, agents, token usage, cost, and tool calls across your developer fleet.

Use cases

Understand Copilot usage and cost across teams

  • Track token consumption with gen_ai.usage.input_tokens and gen_ai.usage.output_tokens, broken down by gen_ai.request.model.
  • Attribute cost and adoption to teams and environments using resource attributes such as service.namespace and deployment.environment.name.

Trace agent sessions end to end

  • Follow invoke_agent, chat, execute_tool, and execute_hook spans for every Copilot Chat agent turn.
  • Group interactions into conversations with gen_ai.conversation.id and identify which tools (gen_ai.tool.name) agents call most.

Detect errors and slow responses

  • Pinpoint failed LLM calls and tool executions with error.type.
  • Monitor gen_ai.client.operation.duration to spot latency regressions by model or provider.

Govern telemetry centrally

  • Roll out the exporter through Copilot managed settings (MDM, GitHub organization or enterprise settings, or managed-settings.json).
  • Keep prompt and response content capture disabled by default; enable it only where your organization has approved it.

Get started

  1. Create a Dynatrace API token with the openTelemetryTrace.ingest, metrics.ingest, and logs.ingest scopes.
  2. Set COPILOT_OTEL_ENABLED=true, point OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT at https://<environment-id>.live.dynatrace.com/api/v2/otlp, use the http/protobuf protocol, and set OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_METRICS_TEMPORALITY_PREFERENCE=delta.
  3. Launch VS Code from that shell, or configure the same options under github.copilot.chat.otel.* in user or managed settings.
