Overview

OGX (formerly Llama Stack) is an open-source runtime for building AI applications and agents. It powers the GenAI Playground and GenAI Studio in Red Hat OpenShift AI 3.x and exposes the OpenAI-compatible Responses API on top of pluggable inference providers such as Ollama and vLLM.

Dynatrace monitors OGX applications with either OneAgent auto-instrumentation or OpenTelemetry. Model calls are captured as gen_ai.* chat spans, and OGX's own ogx.* metrics and tool spans are exported over OTLP, so model performance, token usage, and cost show up in the AI Observability app.

Monitor model performance and cost

  • Track latency and token usage per model with gen_ai.client.operation.duration and gen_ai.client.token.usage.
  • Compare inference providers behind OGX by gen_ai.provider.name and gen_ai.request.model.

Trace Responses API requests end to end

  • Follow each request from your service through the OGX Responses API to the underlying LLM call in a single distributed trace.
  • Inspect OGX tool invocations (invoke_tool) alongside the chat spans they trigger.

Choose your instrumentation path

  • Use OneAgent for zero-code capture of model calls on hosts and Kubernetes.
  • Use OpenTelemetry (opentelemetry-instrument) to export traces and OGX runtime metrics directly to Dynatrace.

Get started

  1. Run OGX with your inference provider (for example, Ollama) using a distribution config.yaml.
  2. Either install Dynatrace OneAgent on the host, or follow the OGX telemetry guide and export OTLP to Dynatrace with an API token that has the openTelemetryTrace.ingest and metrics.ingest scopes.
  3. Send a request and open the AI Observability app to explore models, prompts, and traces.

Details

OGX does not emit GenAI agent spans, so invoke_agent spans and gen_ai.agent.name are not available for OGX agents.
