Security Gateway has been renamed “ActiveGate”

Some Dynatrace users have pointed out that the name “Security Gateway” doesn’t really convey the functionality of this important Dynatrace component. So, to better reflect the existing and future functionality, we’ve renamed Security Gateway to “ActiveGate” as of OneAgent version 1.151.

The name Security Gateway fulfilled its job well in the past. However, “ActiveGate” more accurately conveys the additional functionality we’ve added to this component, which now includes AWS monitoring, Azure monitoring, VMware monitoring, OneAgent traffic routing, beacon forwarding, and execution of synthetic HTTP monitors from private infrastructure (available with OneAgent version 1.152).

Note that we continue to provide the same two types of ActiveGate that we provided in the past:

  • Environment ActiveGate
An Environment ActiveGate is downloaded by you from your Dynatrace environment and installed within your infrastructure. An Environment ActiveGate is bound to your environment and is thus only capable of handling traffic from OneAgents that belong to the same environment as the ActiveGate. An Environment ActiveGate can only handle traffic from OneAgents, not from other ActiveGates. An Environment ActiveGate can communicate to Dynatrace Server either directly or via a Cluster ActiveGate.
  • Cluster ActiveGate
A Cluster ActiveGate is downloaded by you from your Dynatrace Managed cluster and installed within your infrastructure. A Cluster ActiveGate is capable of handling all traffic that belongs to a Dynatrace Managed cluster (i.e., Cluster ActiveGate handles traffic from all Dynatrace environments within a cluster). Cluster ActiveGates are typically used to set up a OneAgent connection point in some distant location (for example, a separate data center) or as a dedicated entry point into an otherwise secure location (for example, to allow receipt of messages from mobile apps or Dynatrace synthetic monitoring data).

We hope you find this name change useful. As always, we’d love to hear your feedback. Feel free to share your thoughts at Dynatrace Community.
