Overview

dtctl is the open-source CLI for the Dynatrace platform. It follows familiar verb-noun syntax (like kubectl) and gives platform engineers, SREs, developers, and AI agents a single interface to manage workflows, dashboards, notebooks, queries, SLOs, settings, and more, directly from the terminal. Agents discover available commands at runtime and receive structured output they can parse and act on immediately. Humans get tab autocomplete, resource shortcuts, and in-editor YAML editing.

Use cases

  • AI agent automation loops: Agents discover, query, modify, execute, and verify Dynatrace resources end-to-end ā€” without handing control back to a human. Structured output includes follow-up suggestions and error context for autonomous iteration.
  • Documents-as-code: Pull documents like dashboards and workflows from the platform, version-control and template them, adjust queries locally, and push changes back ā€” or wire dashboard definitions into CI/CD pipelines so dashboards evolve with services.
  • Cross-environment management: Switch seamlessly between dev, staging, and production. Authenticate via SSO or API token, run dtctl doctor to verify, and operate across environments with consistent commands.

Get started

Install dtctl from the dynatrace-oss/dtctl GitHub repository, connect it to your Dynatrace environment, and run your first query. The Quick Start Guide walks through the full setup in under five minutes. From there, try pulling a dashboard, modifying it, and pushing it back.
