Overview

With the OneAgent AWS Lambda extension, you get the power of Dynatrace PurePath 4 tracing technology to AWS Lambda functions. This gives you seamless end-to-end distributed tracing for AWS Lambda functions without touching any code through auto-instrumentation, thereby helping you to understand better potential issues that may impact your end users’ experience.

OneAgent AWS Lambda extension also enables you to collect logs directly from your AWS Lambda functions and send them to Dynatrace for analysis. The solution is an alternative to the CloudWatch via Firehose integration with benefits in terms of cost and latency, and is also easier to set up, in particular if AWS Lambda tracing is already in place.

Use cases

The unique capabilities of the enhanced AWS Lambda extension include:

  • An end-to-end distributed tracing view with full visibility across hybrid and multi-cloud environments
  • In-context log analysis without query in Clouds app with other observability singals
  • AI-automated log observability, advanced analytics wity Dynatrace DQL and easier troubleshooting to speed up your teams' mean time to identify (MTTI) issues and repair (MTTR)
  • Mobile and Browser experience is directly traced into connected to backends, including AWS Lambda (see also Dynatrace RUM and Session Replay)
  • Precise AI-powered answers, provided by Dynatrace Davis AI
  • Actionable analytics across the entire stack, including:
    • Automatic, cold-start detection for every Lambda invocation
    • A single pane of glass to view trace information along with AWS CloudWatch metrics

Get started

For Python, Node.js, and Java Lambda functions, Dynatrace provides a single Lambda layer that enables both trace and log collection.

  • Follow deployment guide in Dynatrace documentation.

For .NET, Dynatrace provides a standalone layer that collects only logs (explained in the above-mentioned document). In case of .Net traces follow this installation instructions.

Compatibility information

The Dynatrace OneAgent extension supports AWS Lambda functions written in Node.js, Python, or Java running on an Amazon Linux 2 and Graviton runtime.
