There’s no standard playbook, and that’s part of what makes the role interesting. Most of your week is spent embedded in a product team, working closely with product managers and engineers rather than designing in isolation. A big part of the job is understanding the problem before jumping to solutions. That might mean talking with users, exploring product data, and ensuring that you’re solving the right problem.
From there, you’ll design end-to-end experiences, create prototypes to explore and test ideas, and stay closely involved as those ideas move into production. Expect to spend time working in the technical domain and within our Strato Design System. Some weeks focus more on research and discovery, while others are all about building. Throughout it all, you have real ownership of your work. You’re trusted to bring ideas forward, shape direction, and help drive outcomes.
Two things matter most: curiosity and impact. First, take the time to learn the product and domain deeply. Observability is a complex space, and the designers who make the biggest impact are the ones who invest in understanding it. That knowledge helps you build trust, ask better questions, and create more effective solutions. Second, focus on outcomes rather than output. Success isn't measured by how many designs you ship - it's about solving real customer problems and creating meaningful value. It helps to think in systems and design for scale from the start. The strongest designers look beyond the next screen and consider how experiences work across the product as a whole. Be comfortable with ambiguity. We value people who bring their perspective, challenge assumptions, and contribute to the conversation. At Dynatrace, different viewpoints help us build better products.
To stand out at Dynatrace, you don't need a huge portfolio. All you need are a few strong examples that show how you handle complexity. Here are a few things we look for:
The best interviews feel like a conversation. Here are a few ways to prepare and make the most of your time with the Hiring Manager:
We use AI in two main ways. First, we use it to accelerate parts of our own work so we can spend more time on the areas where designers add the most value: discovery, judgment, and craft. Second, we design AI-assisted experiences for our customers. This means thinking not only about how people interact with a product, but also how AI can help make those experiences more effective and intuitive. One thing we've learned is that AI tends to amplify whatever foundation you bring to it. Strong product thinking and design judgment, combined with AI, can be a real multiplier. Without that foundation, it can produce work that looks finished but doesn't fully solve the problem. That's why we treat AI as a partner in the work, rather than a shortcut around it.
Largely by knowing what to leave out. The hard part usually isn't showing millions of data points. It's deciding which ones matter for the decision a user is trying to make—and when. That comes from understanding both the data and the user's goals, which is why technical domain immersion matters here. The Strato Design System provides scalable patterns, so you're not rebuilding the basics every time. The judgment about what to surface, simplify, or leave out is still yours to make.
The primary career path for designers at Dynatrace is the individual contributor track, where you can continue to grow and advance while staying hands-on in the work. Progression doesn't require moving into people management. As you level up, your responsibilities and influence grow. You're expected to drive more of your own work, shape design direction, build a deep understanding of the product, and take on opportunities to lead through expertise rather than authority. You'll also play an important role in sharing knowledge, supporting others, and helping shape where the product goes. For those interested in leading people, a management track exists as well. However, it's a separate path - not a prerequisite for growth.
Collaborative, technical, and quality-focused. You’ll join a global Design & Experience community of 70+ people, and some of the best work here comes from staying connected across design, product, and engineering - not designing in isolation. We value designers who bring their perspective, share ideas openly, and aren't afraid to question how something is currently done. We also care deeply about craft and attention to detail. Moving quickly on complex problems and getting the details right can sometimes pull you in different directions. Knowing how to navigate that tension is an important part of the craft.
Compensation and benefits vary by location, but we offer competitive pay, generous time off, and global programs that support well-being. At our R&D headquarters in Linz, you'll find perks like an in-house barista café, a gym, and collaborative workspaces designed to support both focused work and teamwork. We also offer relocation support for people moving to the area. No matter where you're based, we're committed to creating an environment where people can do their best work and continue to grow.
