Streamlining operations to connect the future

As one of the largest telcos in Europe and Africa, Vodafone’s mission is to connect people and businesses through world-class mobile and internet services. Through a multi-year transformation, the telecoms group is working to simplify its business, enhance customer experience, and drive sustainable growth. Part of that strategy includes investing in AI capabilities that enable teams to automate manual processes and unlock efficiency through streamlined operations and services.

Behind the scenes, Vodafone’s digital services are built on a vast and complex technology estate, spanning 45,000 on-premise servers and a multi-cloud environment that encompasses all major hyperscalers. Operating at this scale, it was becoming increasingly difficult for Vodafone to capture and contextualize all the observability data needed to optimize services, resolve issues quickly, and automate operations. Its log management solution became financially unsustainable and no longer aligned with the company’s cloud-first, AI-driven future. As a result, Vodafone sought a more modern platform that could scale with the business and reduce complexity.

Modernizing log management with a unified approach

Vodafone chose Dynatrace as part of a wider ambition to modernize its observability capability. The immediate priority was to offset a projected increase in log management costs, but Vodafone also saw that Dynatrace was ideally suited to its future vision for more autonomous operations. Dynatrace would enable Vodafone to unify logs alongside metrics and traces to achieve full stack observability, while its integration with AWS made it easy to integrate into its ecosystem.

“We had a patchwork quilt of observability solutions and wanted to consolidate into a single suite that aligned to our cloud first strategy,” said Luke Bradley, Head of Engineering & Transformation at Vodafone Group. “Dynatrace was not only the most commercially compelling option, but we also saw it would make the best AI features available as quickly as possible. The migration from our legacy logging solution was done under extremely aggressive timelines, and our partnership with Accenture proved instrumental in getting our center of excellence up to speed on how to engineer Dynatrace for success. Most importantly, we now have a platform that can scale with the future ambition of our business and its broader aspirations for AI.”

Life with Dynatrace

  • Scalable log management: Vodafone migrated around 8,000 dashboards and 2,500 users from its incumbent logging solution to Dynatrace in just eight weeks. With Dynatrace Grail, the telco was able to quickly scale its consumption from around 8TB to 18TB of data per day, while avoiding a 3-4x projected increase in logging costs from its incumbent provider.
  • Rapid user adoption: Working with Dynatrace and its partner Accenture, Vodafone was able to achieve 100% user adoption by the end of the migration. Large-scale training sessions helped users build confidence with Dynatrace and learn how to develop their own dashboards with ease.
  • Modernized delivery: By embedding the AI-powered insights from Dynatrace into its development and testing cycle, Vodafone has accelerated its shift-left strategy. Engineers can now innovate faster and release with confidence by reducing the risk of bugs entering production where they can impact customers.
  • Future-proofed for AI: Dynatrace will play a central role in Vodafone’s future ambitions for AI, including its drive to move from manual intervention to autonomous remediation. This will be critical to improving service reliability, customer experience, and employee productivity. Dynatrace will provide assurance and observability of the AI and LLMs powering these workflows and enable Vodafone to see whether its investments in AI are delivering the intended business outcomes.

“Dynatrace gives us faster insight into critical user journeys, which helps us improve the customer experience,” said Afsheen Rahiman, Head of Test, Release and Environments at Vodafone Three. “We’re no longer looking at logs in isolation, so everything is in context with metrics, traces and digital experience in one platform. We can query any data, any time, without worrying about cost. Ultimately, what’s most exciting is that Dynatrace gives us a true end-to-end view into some of our most complex critical business flows like our order management journey. That enables us to shift to proactive operations at scale, so we can provide better support to IT teams and our customers.”

Dynatrace will play a critical role in Vodafone’s AI roadmap by providing assurance and observability into the AI and LLMs that power our agents and ensure they deliver the intended business outcomes.
