Personalizing health recommendations at a global scale

Vitality Group provides a behavioral science platform to 49 million members in 40 countries worldwide. Originally launched in South Africa, Vitality uses behavioral science, economics and health and life insurance insight to encourage healthier choices for members worldwide. Its parent company, Discovery Group, disrupted the market with one of the first behavioral science platforms of its kind and is now building on that foundation with Vitality AI.

Vitality AI is being developed with Google to deliver personalized recommendations that help members improve their long-term health outcomes. Built on Google’s Vertex technology stack, using Gemini AI models and Discovery’s 60 million life years worth of health data, it will provide guidance centered on physical activity, sleep, and health screenings. To support reliable member experiences as it scales, Vitality needed end-to-end observability across its AI stack. It also needed a cost-effective way to manage log data, after its previous solution became difficult to scale economically.

Dynatrace enabled us to replace our existing log monitoring solution, Elasticsearch, which had become unaffordable and wasn’t able to scale effectively. That’s saved us close to seven figures in log management and analytics costs.

Supporting innovation with contextual observability

Working with IT partner Mediro, Vitality Group implemented Dynatrace as its primary observability platform. Dynatrace provides end-to-end visibility into the systems supporting Vitality AI, from the training and inference of models on Google’s technology stack, all the way to the recommendations surfaced to members through its mobile channels. In addition, Vitality has consolidated its logging solutions with Dynatrace Grail, giving teams a more scalable way to manage telemetry and analyze data in context across its digital environment.

“Observability is mission critical in an AI-first world,” said Hushan Padayachee, Chief Information Officer, Vitality Group. “Dynatrace provides answers rather than more data to review and analyze. This gives us the visibility we need to keep innovating faster, while helping our engineering teams focus their time on delivering new value for the business.”

Dynatrace has allowed us to improve productivity across operations and engineering teams by 15 to 20%, just by being a more performant platform.

Life with Dynatrace

  • Reliable AI recommendations: As Vitality AI scales, Dynatrace gives teams the visibility needed to support reliability. This helps Vitality deliver more consistent AI-enabled experiences across its mobile channels.
  • Reduced logging costs: With Dynatrace Grail, Vitality has consolidated its log management toolchain, replacing its previous solution, Elasticsearch, with a more scalable, cost-effective approach. This has enabled the company to save close to seven figures in log management and analytics costs – reducing spend by 90% or more, while giving engineers a more efficient way to analyze operational data.
  • Greater engineering productivity: Dynatrace enables Vitality’s teams to analyze telemetry on a unified platform, in context with other operational data. This gives engineers a clearer view of system performance and reduces the time spent switching between fragmented tools. As a result, Vitality has improved productivity across its engineering teams by up to 25%, supporting faster innovation.
  • Optimized cloud spend: Vitality uses Dynatrace to identify opportunities to optimize cloud consumption across its behavioral science platform. By providing full visibility across Vitality’s workloads, as well as the ability to optimize cloud resources and architecture with the Clouds App, Dynatrace helps Vitality to manage its AWS and Google Cloud spend more effectively while maintaining the performance needed to support member experiences at scale.

“Having used Dynatrace over the past 15 years, we’ve been able to provide better experiences to our customers around the world,” added Padayachee. “AI is just one of our latest use cases. Dynatrace has already saved us seven figures in log management and analytics costs and is now helping us support the next wave of digital innovation with the launch of Vitality AI.”
