“When performance isn’t where it needs to be, our DevOps engineers can view the full picture in a single tool. We get to the root cause much quicker and only involve the team members who are needed to implement fixes.”
What type of application are you monitoring?
We operate a web-based application implemented in Java that runs on JBoss/Tomcat within datacenters in the US, Canada, Europe, and Singapore. The application enables us to offer our facility management and real estate (CAFM) software as a cloud service.
What were you using before Dynatrace?
Before giving Dynatrace a try we tried different tools that come with products we use to operate our services. Keeping track of the big picture was challenging though since the data we got from these tools covered only a segment of our environment.
What made you decide to give Dynatrace a try?
As our SaaS business is growing we absolutely need to have an integrated solution that gives all members of our various teams the same level of insight and connects data from different perspectives. Dynatrace promised to present the big picture without configuration or setup hassle. It was pretty much exactly what we were looking for, at least in theory. Promises seemed too nice to be true so we had to give it a try. The free trial and a short demo by a sales engineer definitely helped.
What were your biggest concerns when evaluating Dynatrace?
We weren't sure how well our legacy architecture would work with the automatic detection and analysis provided by Dynatrace. Also, privacy and data security is a major issue for our customers, which include world-market leaders in security critical industries. Dynatrace’s chief software architect addressed all of our security concerns personally in a comprehensive call. Dynatrace offering an EU-datacenter was also important to us.
Why did you choose Dynatrace ultimately?
Dynatrace auto-detection mechanisms work great and Smartscape view shows us the full picture at a glance. With Dynatrace everyone in charge of keeping our client’s environments up and running is on the same page. Being responsible for the infrastructure and virtualization doesn't mean you turn a blind eye to the application. When performance isn’t where it needs to be, our DevOps engineers can view the full picture in a single tool. We get to the root cause much quicker and only involve the team members who are needed to implement fixes.
Would you recommend Dynatrace to others?
I definitely do recommend Dynatrace. Once your application becomes mission critical, being up and running is no longer a “nice to have” feature. Dynatrace gives you confidence that everything is in order and you aren't missing something. Besides that, the guys at Dynatrace are really responsive and fix some minor issues in no time.
