VMware vSphere

Setting up Dynatrace monitoring of a VMware platform is easy, using ActiveGate as a communication gateway. ActiveGate receives the data from VMware and sends it to the Dynatrace Cluster. OneAgent, which is installed on each virtual machine, provides complementary data about your infrastructure health.
The flow of monitoring data from your VMware platform to Dynatrace is illustrated in the diagram below.

virtualization data flow

ActiveGate polls your VMware platform (vCenter or standalone ESXi hosts) to obtain information about all important resources that an ESXi server provisions to your virtual machines (for example, CPU usage, memory consumption, and datastore-related activity on your VMware platform). Dynatrace also collects information about events such as virtual machine migrations and newly created machines.

OneAgent covers everything you need to monitor your virtualized operating system. It automatically captures performance information related to CPU, RAM, storage, NICs, and more.

By correlating information from OneAgent and ActiveGate, you understand the dynamics of your virtual infrastructure and its influence on your services and applications.
