Monitoring additional AWS services

Amazon Web Services (AWS) consists of a number of cloud products. Modern application stacks utilize many different AWS building blocks (services). Typically, your monitoring of AWS will consist of monitoring services such as EC2, EBS, ELB, and RDS. Using Dynatrace, you can also monitor other AWS services that influence the performance of your AWS-hosted applications.

The AWS services feature includes monitoring of services that isn't available with out-of-the-box Dynatrace monitoring of AWS. For example, Dynatrace can receive AWS CloudWatch metrics for multiple preselected services You can view graphs per service instance, with a set of dimensions, and create custom graphs that you can pin to your dashboards. You can reduce your CloudWatch costs and throttling by selecting which additional services and metrics to monitor.

Requirements

  • Environment or Cluster (Managed) ActiveGate version 1.181+
Monitoring of all AWS services is enabled automatically and available for Environment or Cluster (Managed) ActiveGate version 1.181+.
  • Dynatrace version 1.182+
  • Updated Monitoring Policy
You must update your monitoring policy for your AWS monitoring to include the additional AWS services.
    See AWS monitoring policy.

Adding an AWS service to monitor

By default, Dynatrace is configured to monitor AWS services with the most relevant metrics. If you want to monitor an additional AWS service using the predefined metrics, you only have to add the AWS supporting service to your AWS monitoring setup.

To add supporting AWS services to your monitoring:

From the navigation menu, select Settings > Cloud and virtualization > AWS.

Edit (pencil icon) the AWS instance you want to modify and click Manage services to display the list of services already configured or to add a new service.

Click Add service and select the service that you want to add.

By default, a number of service metrics are already available. You can remove or edit any of the existing metrics. On the Metrics order tab, you can also change the display order of the metrics and move the most important metrics up. The order you set is reflected on dashboards, and the top four metrics are displayed in infographics.

You can only modify the dimensions of metrics that have multiple dimensions available. To change a metric's statistics, you have to recreate that metric by choosing different statistics. Because there are no options to modify, metrics consisting of only one dimension can't be edited. They can only be removed or added.

Wait time

Once AWS Supporting Services are configured, you may have to wait 15-20 minutes before the metric values are displayed.

Add an AWS service metric to monitor

To monitor a specific metric for a specific AWS supporting service, you first need to add that service and then add the metric.

To add a specific metric for a specific AWS service

From the navigation menu, select Settings > Cloud and virtualization > AWS.

Edit (pencil icon) the AWS instance you want to modify and click Manage services to display the list of services already configured or to add a new service.

Click Add service and select the service that has the metric you want to add. By default, a number of service metrics are already available. You can remove or edit any of the existing metrics.

Click Add metric to display the metric configuration page.

Select the metric you want from the list and configure the metric statistics as required. For this particular metric, you can choose the statistics to be displayed: Sum, Minimum, Maximum, Average, and Sample count.

The Average + Minimum + Maximum statistic enables you to collect all three statistics for one metric instead of one statistic for three metrics separately. This can reduce your expenses for retrieving metrics from your AWS deployment.

Service-wide metrics are metrics for the whole service across all regions. Typically, these metrics include dimensions containing Region in their name (for example, Region and EngineName). If selected, these metrics are displayed on a separate chart when viewing your AWS deployment in Dynatrace.

You can also select the metric dimension; this allows you to specify the characteristic or identity of the metric such as the Application or Platform. Keep in mind that available dimensions differ among services and there are a number of additional dimensions available for each metric.

To be able to save the newly added metric, you need to select at least one statistic and one dimension.

Click the Add metric button to save your settings.

Wait time

When AWS supporting services are configured, you may have to wait 15-20 minutes before the metric values are displayed.
