Tooltip
Our charts may include a tooltip for a data point or series when interacting with the chart. The primary purpose of such an overlay is to provide you (the end-user) with additional contextual information. As with most aspects f our charting components, Creators can customize the tooltip for individual use cases as they see fit. An example tooltip is shown above.
In addition to providing in-context information, the tooltip can also house various additional actions that can be performed on a series/data point. Above is an example of such an action menu.
Interacting with the tooltip often requires the pinning of the tooltip in place, which is done by clicking the data point. Once pinned, the tooltip and its sub-menus can be interacted with, and additional actions performed. These sub-menus and actions depend on individual implementations and thus will vary from app to app.
Legend
Depending on the chart, app, chart size and implementation, an optional legend may be shown to the right or bottom of a chart. The purpose of the legend is to provide additional identifying information for the chart without needing to interact with the chart directly. Above is an example of a legend.
Series highlight and actions
Hovering on a series name within the legend may also provide additional interaction with the chart. In the example above, hovering on the series name in the legend temporarily “highlights” the series within the chart. While hovering on a series item an additional contextual menu icon is revealed. This menu contains the same actions that are located in the tooltip described above.
Isolating and hiding series within the chart
Clicking on a series item within the chart legend will isolate it. By doing so, all other series in the chart are temporarily hidden – as is indicated by the “crossed eye” icons. You can isolate multiple series from the legend by utilizing the standard “shift” and “ctrl/cmd” modifiers.
If you want to hide/unhide an individual series within the chart, you can click on the series’ color/eye icon. This action toggles the visibility of an individual series. You can show/hide multiple series from the legend by utilizing the standard “shift” and “ctrl/cmd” modifiers.
Resizing the legend
The legend can be resized by hovering your cursor between the legend and the chart area. The example above shows the resizing of a legend that is placed to the right of a chart.
