Mobile recording features

When you select Mobile Device as the type of script you are recording, entering a URL in the Recorder opens the Mobile Recorder component.

When you select Mobile Device, you must select the device type and optionally specify the mobile location before entering the URL. For more information, see Creating mobile device Scripts.

The mobile screen displays the website that you entered in the URL field of the main Recorder window. The screen is sized to match the specified dimensions of the device you selected in the Device Manager.

Using the mouse pointer in the Mobile Recorder window creates actions as if you were using fingertips on a mobile device screen. For example, clicking the left mouse button creates a Tap; clicking-and-dragging creates a Swipe when you release the mouse button.

Using the toolbar features described below, you can simulate other mobile device features, such as changing the orientation and zooming the image in or out.
If zooming is disabled in the target website, the feature is not available in the Mobile Recorder.

Change Mobile recorder orientation

  • Stop – Stop recording and return to the main Recorder window.

  • Left – Change the orientation of the mobile screen, as if you turned a mobile device 90 degrees to the left.

  • Right – Change the orientation of the mobile screen, as if you turned a mobile device 90 degrees to the right.

  • Pinch – Simulate dragging fingertips together on a mobile device screen to zoom out, such as decreasing text or image size. After clicking Pinch, use the mouse to click two points on the simulator screen. When you click the second point, the display zooms out.

  • Span – Simulate dragging fingertips apart on a mobile device screen to zoom in, such as increasing text or image size. After clicking Span, use the mouse to click two points on the simulator screen. When you click the second point, the display zooms in.

  • Keystrokes/FormFill – When Keystrokes (the default) is selected, the Recorder captures each keystroke individually, creating Type actions. To capture the value in a field instead of individual keystrokes, select FormFill, to create FormFill actions wherever possible.

  • Touch ON/OFF – With the default setting, Touch ON, actions of the mouse pointer are recorded as mobile device actions; for example, clicking-and-dragging is a Swipe, and selecting a link is a Tap. When you select OFF, these actions are recorded as browser actions. For example, selecting a link is a Click, not a Tap; and clicking-and-dragging the cursor is a Click, not a Swipe (clicking-and-dragging to move an object, such as re-centering a map, has no effect when Touch is OFF). Pinch and Span, however, still resize the display.

  • Capture Scroll ON/OFF – To record the actions for scrolling a page, select Scroll Capture ON. This option is OFF by default.

  • Allow Resize ON/OFF – Specify whether the mobile screen can be resized. When OFF is selected, dragging the corners or sides of the screen has no effect. This setting is OFF by default.

  • Reset Window – Reset the mobile screen to its default size after it has been resized.

  • URL list – You can open additional Mobile Recorder screens by either holding down the Ctrl key when you click a link, or right-clicking the link and selecting Open link in new tab. The new window is stacked on top of the window from which you opened it. The drop-down list to the right of Touch ON/OFF lists the URLS of all open window(s). You can bring a window to the front by selecting the URL from the list.

  • Address bar – To navigate to a different website within the active window, type the URL in the address bar to the right of the URL drop-down list, then either click or press Enter.

Context menu

A context menu can be displayed by right-clicking the Mobile Recorder window. Most of the commands on this menu are the same as in a web browser. For example, you can right-click a link and select Open link in new tab. The context menu includes a Dynatrace Recorder (Mobile) submenu that contains the following commands corresponding to the toolbar features described above: Allow Resize, Reset Window, Capture Scroll, RIGHT, LEFT, Touch ON. The menu also contains SPAN and PINCH if zooming is enabled in the target website.
