Internet health map

To go to the Internet health map, click > Internet health map.

The Internet health map provides a geographic view of Backbone and Last Mile performance that gives you a near real-time view of the global user experience. This enables you to quickly determine if the performance issues in a particular geographical area are part of a broader Internet slow-down.

Backbone and Last Mile metrics are compared to baseline values and a status indicating how performance compares is displayed on the Internet health map. The map compares the current performance to the same day/hour the previous four weeks, which is more accurate than comparing the traffic to the previous hour or day due to the natural cycles of businesses.

You can select to view Backbone, Last Mile, or both; and you can select the metric which you want to view.

The information shown on this page is automatically refreshed every 5 minutes.

The amount of time remaining until the page is refreshed and the day and time that the page was last refreshed is shown in the upper left corner of the page.

Metrics

Select the metric to view from the list located in the upper left corner of the page.

By default, response time is selected.

Product

From the Product list, select whether to view Backbone and/or Last Mile data. By default, both are selected.

Geography

From the Geography list, select the location to view. The default view is World.

When you hover over a country in any view except US, the ISO 3166-2 standard country code is listed in the popup window.

Auto-cycling

Select whether to cycle the metrics or the geographies shown on this map.

If enabled, the Internet health map cycles through and displays the values for a different metric (or geography) every two minutes.

This option may be valuable if it is necessary to continuously display this map, such as in a NOC.

If this option is enabled, you can still manually change the metric or geography; the Internet health map then cycles from the value selected. This option is disabled by default.

Status of metrics

The status shown for each metric for Last Mile and Backbone is calculated by comparing the current value of the metric to its baseline value.

  • The metric's current value is calculated as the average value from the past hour with the past hour calculated up to the previous :00 minutes. For example, if the time is 9:44 am, then the average hourly value is calculated from 8:40 am – 9:40 am.
  • The metric's baseline value is calculated as the metric's average value over the same time period for the past four weeks. For example, if the day/time is Friday at 9:44 am, then the baseline is calculated as the average value for the current hour (9:00 am – 10:00 am) for the past four Fridays.

Each status is described below.

The definition and status for the metrics is the same for Last Mile and Backbone.

The calculation for the status of availability and throughput is different than for other metrics.
