Analysis workflow

From these entry pages, you can drill down to the Waterfall summary page and the waterfall chart for data details that help you analyze a test's performance and troubleshoot any issues that occurred.

Operational summary

To go to the Operational summary page, select > Operational summary.

In the Operational summary page, enter the analysis workflow for a test through:

  • The inline performance chart.
  • The value in the Errors column.
  • The test name.
  • The value in the Steps column.

Performance chart

  1. Click the expand icon to display the performance chart.
  2. Do either:

Errors value

  1. Click the Errors value for a test to go to the Error analysis page.
  2. For further drilldown details, see Error Analysis, below.

Test name or steps value

  1. Go to the Test overview page: Click a test name or Steps value.

  2. For further drilldown details, see Test overview, below.

Test overview

Click a test name or Steps value in the Operational summary page to go to the Test overview page.

When Dynatrace Synthetic is integrated with Dynatrace SaaS/Managed, you can drill down from synthetic tests in SaaS/Managed dashboards to the Test overview page.

From the Test overview page, you can drill down to:

Error analysis

To go to the Error analysis page:

  • Select > Error analysis.

  • In the Operational summary page, click the value in the Errors column for a test.

  • In the Test overview page, click the Performance and Availability tile, then click View in error analysis below the error charts.

  • In the Trend details chart, click a data point that has an error , then click Error analysis in the tooltip.

  • In the Raw scatter chart, click a data point that has an error , then click Error analysis in the tooltip.

  • In an Operations dashboard opened from the Dashboards page, click an Availability value that's less than 100%.

From the Error analysis page, enter the analysis workflow through the Error list. The error list is available when the time frame is 48 hours or less.

  1. In the Error analysis page, click Inspect errors to display the Error list.
  2. Click the expand icon for an error to display the error details.
  3. Click View waterfall to go to the Waterfall summary page for the test execution.
    If Screen Capture on Error is enabled for the test, you can also click View screen capture to open the Screen capture page.

Operations dashboard

This section describes the analysis workflow for the Beta Operations dashboards that are created and managed through the Dashboards page. It doesn't apply to the dashboards that are available through > Operations.

In an Operations dashboard, you can enter the analysis workflow by drilling down to the Trend details chart or Error analysis page:

  1. Go to the Dashboards page.
  2. Click the Operations backbone, Operations backbone analyst, or Operations last mile name to open the dashboard.
  3. Click the Performance or Availability for a test to display a popup window with data details.
  4. Do one of these:
    • Click Open in chart view to display the Trend details chart. For further drilldown details, see Trend details, below.
    • Click View error analysis to display the Error analysis page for the test. For further drilldown details, see Error Analysis, above.

Performance dashboard

To go to the Performance dashboard, select > Performance dashboard.

From the Performance dashboard, you can drill down to the Waterfall summary page and from there to the waterfall through:

  • The performance chart for the test or a step
  • Hyperlinked items in the tabs below the health map and performance chart.

Performance chart

  1. Above the performance chart for the test, click View in charts to go to the Trend details page.
  2. For further drilldown details, see Trend details, below.

Analysis tab

  • Errors – If an error type displays the error icon , click the name to go to the Errors tab, which will be filtered for the error type. See Errors Tab below for more details.
  • Nodes – For Backbone tests, click a node name to go to the Trend details page for the test executions on that node. For further drilldown details, see Trend details, below.
  • Contributor Groups – Click a contributor group name to go to the Trend details page. The chart is filtered to show data for each host in the contributor group. For further drilldown details, see Trend details, below.
  • Hosts – Click a contributor group name to go to the Trend details page. The chart is filtered to show data for the selected host. For further drilldown details, see Trend details, below.

Alerts tab

  1. Click an alert to open the Alert Summary window.
  2. Click Open Alerts Detail in the bottom right corner to display the alert details within the Performance dashboard window.
    In the Root Cause Analysis section, do one of these:
    • In the Causes across all problems or Individual problem summary table, click a First Occurrence timestamp to go to the Waterfall summary page. For further drilldown details, see From Waterfall summary page to waterfall chart, below.
    • Click View in charts to the right of the performance chart to display the chart in the Trend details page. For further drilldown details, see Trend details, below.

Errors tab

  1. Click an error to go to the Waterfall summary page for the test execution.

  2. For further drilldown details, see From Waterfall summary page to waterfall chart, below.

Steps tab

  1. If necessary, filter the performance chart by clicking the test names to exclude or include the tests.
  2. Above the performance chart, click View in charts to go to the Trend details page, which charts the data by step.
  3. For further drilldown details, see Trend details, below.

Alert log

To display the Alert logs page, click the alerts icon at the top of the Portal.

From the Alert logs page, you can drill down to the Alert details page, and from there to the Waterfall summary page or the Trend details page.

  1. In the alerts list, click an Alert time timestamp to display the Alert details page.
  2. In the Root Cause Analysis section, do one of these:
    • In the Causes across all problems or Individual problem summary table, click a First Occurrence timestamp to go to the Waterfall summary page. For further drilldown details, see From Waterfall summary page to waterfall chart, below.
    • Click View in charts to the right of the performance chart to display the chart in the Trend details page. For further drilldown details, see Trend details, below.

Interactive chart

To go to the Interactive charts page:

  • Select > Interactive charts.
  • In the Trend details page, click View in interactive charts above the chart.
  • In the Raw scatter page, click the "more" icon above the chart, then click View in interactive charts.

To drill down, click a data point in the interactive chart, select one of these from the drilldown menu, then drill down further as described:

  • Root Cause Analysis – In the Causes across all problems or Individual problem summary table, click a First Occurrence timestamp to go to the Waterfall summary page. The Waterfall summary page is available from the interactive chart only through Root Cause Analysis. For further drilldown details, see From Waterfall summary page to waterfall chart, below.
  • Raw Data – In the Scatter Chart (Table), click a Time or click a metric value in a Step column to open the waterfall chart.
  • Raw Scatter – Click a data point and select Waterfall to open the waterfall chart.
  • Waterfall – Go directly from the main chart to the waterfall chart.

When you go to the waterfall chart through a drilldown from the interactive chart, the waterfall opens in a new browser tab. The chart for the first test step is displayed. From this chart, you can scroll to the waterfall charts for other steps (if any).

You must enable popups for portal.dynatrace.com (or portaleap.dynatrace.com if you're using the EAP Portal) to allow the waterfall chart to open from the interactive chart.

Trend details

Drill down to the Trend details page from:

  • A tile in a custom dashboard.
  • The performance chart for a test in the Operational summary page.
  • The Performance and availability or Steps failing chart in the Test overview page.
  • An Operations dashboard that you open from the Dashboards page.
  • The Performance dashboard.
  • The Alert details page for an alert listed in the Alert log.

The Trend details page has several paths to the Waterfall summary page, and from there to the waterfall chart:

You can also go to the Error analysis page through any data point that has an error.

Raw scatter

Drill down to the Raw scatter page from:

  • The Operational summary page – Expand a test to display the performance trend chart, then click View raw scatter chart.
  • The Test overview page – In the Performance and Availability view, click View raw scatter chart below the trend chart.
  • The Trend details page – Click a data point in the chart, then click Raw scatter in the tooltip.

From the Raw scatter page, you can drill down to:

From Waterfall summary page to waterfall chart

  1. In the Waterfall summary page, expand a step to view the metrics timeline for the step.
  2. Click Analyze in waterfall to go to the waterfall chart.
  3. Click an object in the waterfall for further analysis.

For test executions that have errors, you can go to the Screen capture page from the Waterfall summary page or the Waterfall page.

From Waterfall summary page to problem analysis

If errors or performance problems occurred, the Waterfall summary page includes an Analysis section that identifies the page (step) where the issues occurred, and provides summary information for the issues that contributed to the overall problem. Click Analyze problems to go to the Problem analysis page. For more information, see Problem analysis.
