DC RUM 2017 Licensing

Use your Community user account credentials to access the eServices licensing website, product installation downloads, and related Community product support content.

The license management team:

  • Creates a license and sends a notification email to the account owners with an unactivated license file. Only license owners are able to perform license management tasks such as activating, deactivating, or reactivating a license on the eServices website.
  • Creates an AMD capacity license (if you purchased one) and sends an email notification to the account owners informing them that their capacity license can be applied to the AMD.

The Dynatrace NAM licensing model is based on the capacity license, which includes the analysis capability of the following modules:

  • TCP
  • HTTP Express (Web Hit Level)
  • SMB
  • DNS
  • LDAP
  • SMTP
  • VPN Gateway
  • Enterprise Synthetic
  • SaaS Synthetic Monitoring
  • User Experience Management

While this license covers basic monitoring, the actual license that you will use may vary significantly. For example, to monitor a simple web application delivered via HTTP, your basic application decoding license would contain a license for decoding and analyzing HTTP (HTTP Express). However, if you also wanted to monitor and analyze the database that is used for this web application, you would need an additional database module license. Such license combinations are custom tailored to your monitoring needs and, depending on the application you plan to monitor, may include multiple protocol decoders. Such licenses can have the following statuses:

A license is assigned activated status after it has been installed on a server and an license file has been applied. An activated license is bound to the machine on which it was installed.

A license that has been deactivated can be reactivated on a machine other than the machine on which it was originally activated.

The issued status is assigned only to POC licenses. When the expiration date is reached, the license is automatically disabled.

After a license is created, it's assigned open status until it is activated.

A terminated license can't be activated again and is removed from the list of available licenses on the eServices My Licensing page. Licenses that exceed their expiration date are automatically terminated. Perpetual licenses can be terminated manually.

Capacity licensing

An AMD capacity license is based on the amount of the traffic you monitor and analyze. The capacity license is monitored and compared to actual analyzed traffic.

Depending on your subscription, your AMD can analyze up to 0.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps, or 20 Gbps of traffic data. Which license you purchase depends on how much traffic you plan to monitor. Compare the actual monitored volume to the purchased capacity license and determine whether your license meets your monitoring requirements.

Capacity licenses have related hardware requirements. See AMD hardware recommendations for more information.

Use the NAM Console for all licensing tasks when possible.

For example, you can activateand install a license directly from the NAM Console to automate downloading and importing a license to your AMD. This simplifies license activation and installation and eliminates the need to use the license file sent in your notification email.

Capacity licensing characteristics and license violations:

  • The monitored traffic volume is measured every second.
  • Whether a license violation has occurred is determined by the percentage of excess traffic during a 24-hour period.
One percent (1%) of license violations during the 24-hour period is permitted and the monitoring day is not marked as license violation.
If the total license violation time in a 24-hour period exceeds 1% (approximately 14 min. and 24 sec.), that monitoring day is marked as a license violation day and it triggers the WARNING status.

WARNING period

A WARNING status period begins from the first day marked as license violation day and lasts for 30 consecutive days.
During the WARNING period, the amount of license violations for each day is not taken into account.

Action - This is the time to either lower the monitored traffic volume or acquire a higher capacity license.

If you correct a license violation problem by lowering the monitored traffic volume within the WARNING period, the status switches to PROBATION at the end of the WARNING period (30 days after the first day marked as a license violation).

A PROBATION status period lasts for 60 days, and if no license violation days occur during this time the status switches to NORMAL.
If a license violation occurs during the PROBATION period, the status switches to MUST UPGRADE.

A MUST UPGRADE period lasts 30 days from the first license violation day in the PROBATION period.

Action - This is the time to purchase and upload a higher capacity license.

If no license upgrade is performed within 30 days of a MUST UPGRADE period, the status switches to LOCKED.

LOCKED period

LOCKED status has no expiration. Monitoring and analysis continues, but the API alerting and reporting features are restricted.

Action - This is the time to purchase and upload a higher capacity license.

License statuses

The following license capacity and activation statuses are presented in the license manager of the NAM Console:

License capacity statuses

License capacity status is displayed on the AMD summary screen in the NAM Console. Select the AMD on the devices list to view the AMD summary screen.

The following example illustrates a scenario where a license violation occurred but the traffic spikes have been corrected and the license capacity status returns to normal once the Probation period ends.

This example illustrates a case where another capacity violation occurs during the Probation period. The capacity violation during the Probation period triggers a Must upgrade period during which you must apply a higher capacity license. If no new license is applied, the status will switch to Locked, and alerting and reporting features will be restricted.

License activation statuses

License activation status is displayed on the Licenses panel. You can view the panel by clicking the License activation status link from the AMD summary screen, or by opening the NAM Console menu and selecting Licenses.
