Time to upgrade! NAM is scheduled for end of support. It's time to move to Dynatrace our all-in-one software intelligence platform.

Install NAM Server in NAM 2018

Applies to NAM 2018

The installer walks you through the installation process, but we recommend that you review the planning section first to ensure success.

Planning and preparation

  • Read the installation guidelines for essential planning information:
    • The general order of installation activities is important. For example, you must install the NAM Console before installing the NAM Server.

    • Hardware requirements and recommendations.

    • Licensing requirements, including third-party licensing. Besides the NAM licenses, you need licenses for Microsoft Windows Server and Microsoft SQL Server hosting the NAM Server software and database. You need to make decisions related to SQL Server licensing in particular.

    • Network preparation.

Important: All NAM Server user authentication goes through the NAM Console. You must open the NAM Console up for web access to all NAM users so that they can log in.

  • Be sure you are making a fresh NAM Server installation, and it is not part of a failover installation.
  • When you run the installer, have the Internal API token or NAM Console administrator credentials handy. The installer will prompt you for an API token or for NAM Console administrator credentials so it can retrieve a token automatically. See API tokens for more information.

Verifying database access, permissions, and connection

The NAM Server installation requires a SQL Server database and SQL Server database user with certain user rights. The installer can create them for you automatically, but your local security requirements may not permit it.

If you're using a remote database server, verify the connection. Make sure your firewall settings allow the machine on which you install NAM Server to connect to the database server. The default Microsoft SQL Server port is 1433.

For more information, see Preparing NAM Server.

Verifying a connection to NAM Console

The installer connects to NAM Console. Make sure your firewall settings allow the machine on which you install the NAM Server to connect to the NAM Console. The default NAM Console port is 4183.

Applies to NAM 2018+

All NAM Server user authentication goes through the NAM Console starting with NAM 2018. If you install or upgrade to NAM 2018, you must prepare by giving all NAM users web access to the NAM Console so they can log in.

The NAM Server installer walks you through the installation process. This help topic is mainly supplemental.

You can use a standalone NAM Server installer or you can use the full NAM installation set.

  1. Open the downloads page for NAM.
You need to register with the site and obtain a login before you can access it.
  2. Download an installer.
  3. Exit all other programs before running the setup program.
  4. Run the NAM Server setup file.
    • If you are already running NAM Server software, this must be an upgrade. See the upgrade instructions instead.
  5. When the installer starts, follow the installation steps in order.
Expand any of the following sections for details on a specific page of installation settings.

Installer screen details

See Private addresses and public URLs of NAM components for an explanation of how NAM private addresses and public URLs are used.

After you install

  • If you have not obtained a license, do so before using the NAM Server.
  • Verify that you can sign on to the NAM Server. All NAM sign-on activity automatically (and transparently) goes through your NAM Console, so you have to make sure every NAM Server in your deployment can see the NAM Console in your deployment. Make sure you can:
    • See the NAM Server in your web browser
    • Sign on to the NAM Server
    • Access the reports and other screens you need to access

Changing installation settings after you install the software

If you need to change a value (a URL, for example) that you set during installation:

  1. In Windows, open the Apps & features panel.

  2. Find the NAM Server in the list, click it, and select Uninstall to start the installer/uninstaller application.
Don't worry if Modify is unavailable. The Uninstall option will not uninstall anything unless you choose the Uninstall NAM Server option on the Welcome screen:

  3. When the change options are displayed, select the option you need:

    • Change NAM Console, HTTP and SSL Server settings
    • Change database user password
  4. Click Next to go to the configuration screens.

If the software must be stopped before you can make your changes, you will receive a warning. It may take a few moments to stop the software.

Uninstalling the software

If you need to uninstall the software, do so through the Windows procedures for uninstalling an application.

  1. In Windows, open the Apps & features panel.
  2. Find the server in the list, click it, and select Uninstall.
This will run the installer again.
  3. Choose the Uninstall NAM Server option and click Next to page through the uninstall procedure.
  4. Restart the system.

This uninstallation does not remove or detach the database. If you want to discard the database, you need to do it manually using SQL Server management tools.
