Troubleshooting NAM Console

Refer to this information for problems with the NAM Console.

“Error: CS364: could not connect to the database.” during NAM Console installation

  • You must turn on SQL Server browser if you want to connect to a named instance of SQL Server.

  • In Microsoft SQL Server Express, the service is disabled in each type of installation.

  • In other releases of Microsoft SQL Server, the service starts automatically if SQL is installed in “named instance” mode.

  • TCP/IP for this instance must be on. It is disabled by default in Microsoft SQL Server Express and enabled by default in all other versions.

An “Error: CS364: Could not connect to the database. The driver returned the following message...” message during installation indicates that these prerequisites are not met. Possible messages returned by the driver:

  • “Unable to get information from SQL Server: [server name].”

  • “Server [server name] has no instance named [server instance].”

  • “Network error IOException: Connection refused: connect”

To ensure that you are working with the correct SQL Server configuration, follow this procedure before continuing with the NAM Console installation.

Click OK to close the message window.

In Windows, click the Start button and select All Programs  ► Microsoft SQL Server [release]  ► Configuration Tools  ► SQL Server Configuration Manager.

If you want to connect to a named instance of SQL Server:

Navigate to SQL Server Configuration Manager  ► SQL Server Services.

Right-click SQL Server Browser and select Properties from the menu.

On the Service tab, set Start Mode to Manual.

Right-click SQL Server Browser Service and select Start from the menu.

Navigate to SQL Server Configuration Manager  ► SQL Server Network Configuration  ► Protocols for [instance name].

Right-click TCP/IP and select Properties from the menu.

On the Protocol tab, change Enabled to Yes (in the general section).

Navigate to SQL Server Configuration Manager  ► SQL Server Services.

Right-click SQL Server and select Restart from the menu.

Continue with the NAM Console installation.

NAM Console uses too much memory

You can control the amount of used memory in several ways:

  • Disable the automatic trace recording. For more information, see Recorded traffic

  • Disable the Guided Configuration connection on some of your NAM Probes.

  • Reset the automatically recorded trace. Use this option carefully, because resetting the trace will cause all of the previously gathered statistics to be lost. For more information, see Recorded traffic

  • Restart the Dynatrace NAM Console service using the Windows services.msc utility.

    Select Start  ► Run.

Type the services.msc utility name in the Open box.

    Click OK.

On the list of the running services, right-click the Dynatrace NAM Console service and select Restart from the context menu.
