Time to upgrade! NAM is scheduled for end of support. It's time to move to Dynatrace our all-in-one software intelligence platform.

Install the NAM Console

Applies to NAM 2019+

The installer walks you through the installation process, but we recommend that you review the planning section first to ensure success. When you are ready, proceed to installation.

Planning and preparation

Read the installation guidelines for essential planning information:

  • The general order of installation activities is important. For example, you must install the NAM Console before installing the NAM Server.

  • Hardware requirements and recommendations.

  • Licensing, including third-party licensing.

  • In some work environments, security policy does not permit you to use this installer to create a SQL database automatically. In such cases, you (or your approved SQL database administrator) must create a database before you install this software. See Preparing a console database for details.

  • Network preparation.

Important: Starting with NAM 2018, all NAM Server user authentication goes through the NAM Console. You must open the NAM Console up for web access to all NAM users so that they can log in.

Verifying database access, permissions, and connection

A NAM Console installation requires a SQL Server database and SQL Server database user with certain user rights. The installer can create them for you automatically, but your local security requirements may not permit it.

If you're using a remote database server, verify the connection. Make sure your firewall settings allow the machine on which you install NAM Console to connect to the database server. The default Microsoft SQL Server port is 1433.

For more information, see Preparing NAM Console database.

The NAM Console installer walks you through the installation process. This help topic is mainly supplemental.

You can use a standalone NAM Console installer or you can use the full NAM installation set.

  1. Open the downloads page for NAM.
You need to register with the site and obtain a login before you can access it.
  2. Download an installer.
You can download a full installation set in one .iso file, or download a NAM Console installer separately if you don't need the full NAM installation set.
  3. Exit all other programs before running the setup program.
  4. Run the NAM Console setup file.
    • If you are already running NAM Console software, this must be an upgrade, not a fresh installation. See the upgrade instructions instead.
  5. When the installer starts, follow the installation steps in order.
Expand any of the following sections for details on a specific page of installation settings.

See Private addresses and public URLs of NAM components for an explanation of how NAM private addresses and public URLs are used.

Configuring SSL for NAM Console 2019

The default certificate provided with the NAM Console server installation is self-signed. If your security policy requires that a signed certificate be used for the NAM Console server, you can provide your own certificate issued by a trusted authority.

See How to configure SSL for NAM Console 2019 for details.

After you install

After you install the NAM Console, you should see:

  • Dynatrace > NAM Console on the Windows Start menu
  • Dynatrace\NAM\Console in your Windows Program Files directory

After you have installed the NAM Console and at least one NAM Server, verify that you can sign on to the NAM Server. All NAM sign-on activity automatically (and transparently) goes through your NAM Console, so you have to make sure every NAM Server in your deployment can see the NAM Console in your deployment. See SSO network configuration requirements for essential information on public URLs and private addresses.

Using the public URL for that NAM Server, make sure that you can:

  • See the NAM Server in your web browser
  • Sign on to the NAM Server
  • Access the reports and other screens you need to access

Changing installation settings after you install the software

If you need to change public connectivity settings after installation, open Authentication > SSO and federation in the NAM Console menu. From there, you view, change, and activate/deactivate the public URLs.

If you need to change another installation setting:

  1. In Windows, open the Apps & features panel.

  2. Find the NAM Console in the list, click it, and select Uninstall to start the installer/uninstaller application.
Don't worry if Modify is unavailable. The Uninstall option will not uninstall anything unless you choose the Uninstall NAM Console option on the Welcome screen:

  3. When the change options are displayed, select the option you need:

    • Change HTTP and SSL settings opens the NAM Console private connectivity panel, where you can view the private URL for the NAM Console, change whether to use HTTPS or HTTP for private connectivity, and change the port numbers for private connectivity.

To change public connectivity settings, start the NAM Console and open Authentication > SSO and federation in the NAM Console menu.

    • Change database user password opens the Database user password update panel, where you can change the database password in the NAM Console configuration.
  4. Click Next to go to the configuration screens.

If the software must be stopped before you can make your changes, you will receive a warning. It may take a few moments to stop the software.

Uninstalling the software

If you need to uninstall NAM Console software, do so through the Windows procedure for uninstalling an application.

  1. In Windows, open the Apps & features panel.
  2. Find the console in the list, click it, and select Uninstall.
This will run the installer again in uninstall mode.
  3. Click Next to page through the uninstall procedure.
  4. If you have also installed NAM Server software on the same machine, you now need to restart the “Watchdog Service” Windows service manually before the NAM Server will restart on this machine.

The shared “Watchdog Service” is stopped during component uninstallation and is not automatically restarted. To restart it manually, find “Watchdog Service” in the list of Windows services on your machine and restart it.

The NAM Console uninstallation does not remove or detach the database. If you want to discard the database, you need to do it manually using SQL Server management tools.
