Installation
Follow this procedure to make a fresh Dynatrace NAM 2019 installation.
- If you are upgrading to NAM 2019, see Upgrade.
- If you are installing an earlier release, see Installation in DC RUM 2017 or Installation in NAM 2018.
Be sure to install components in this order:
But you also need to take care of planning, licensing, and third-party software. See below for an overview of the entire deployment procedure.
Step 1. Learn from others
To learn what to watch for and what to avoid, check out our Community Forums.
Step 2. Get your license
The licensing model is based on either a capacity license or a component license.
- A capacity license is based on the amount of the traffic you monitor, regardless of pre-analysis filtering applied, and analysis modules (decodes) employed for the analysis.
- A component license in based on the number of NAM components and analysis modules (decodes) in your deployment. Under this license type, each deployed component is licensed individually.
For information on which licensing model best fits your deployment needs, contact your client success manager (CSM) or account executive (AE). See Licensing for a complete description of NAM licensing options.
Step 3. Review your system
Decide how your deployment should be implemented, what traffic do you want to monitor, and where you should deploy the hardware. For best monitoring performance, plan for the expected capacity and review hardware requirements.
- Prepare your hardware and software as described in:
- Verify that you have all licenses required for the software. Besides the NAM licenses, you also need licenses for Microsoft Windows Server and Microsoft SQL Server hosting the NAM Server software and database. You need to make decisions related to SQL Server licensing in particular. For more information, see Third-Party Licensing.
- Estimate size requirements for your deployment. See Capacity planning for details.
Step 4. Install your Windows operating systems
The NAM Console and NAM Servers require Microsoft Windows and SQL server to operate. Make sure you have appropriate licenses for your deployment and install Microsoft Windows for each of these components. See Third-Party Licensing for details.
Note: There is no need to dedicate a separate machine to the NAM Console. It can coexist on the same Windows machine as a NAM Server in your deployment.
Step 5. Prepare your network for NAM authentication
In NAM 2018 and later:
- All NAM components use SAML 2.0 to manage user credentials (all sign-on activity) within your NAM deployment.
- All users accessing the NAM Server (via NAM Server public URL) are automatically redirected to the NAM Console for authorization.
- To be authorized by the NAM Console, all users must have access to both the NAM Server public URL and NAM Console public URL.
See Single sign-on (SSO) in NAM for an overview of authentication.
Step 6. Install NAM Console
A NAM Console installation requires a SQL Server database and a SQL Server database user with certain user rights. If you use a remote database, make sure that you have the database information ready. If you plan to use a local database, make sure that your local security policy permits the installer to set up the database for you.
- See Install NAM Console for details.
Step 7. Install NAM Servers
-
(Optional) Install additional report servers
If your deployment plan includes multiple report servers grouped in clusters, install any additional Microsoft Windows and SQL servers. See Report server farm.
Step 8. Install Red Hat Enterprise Linux
The NAM Probe monitoring software runs on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Determine the supported Linux version for your NAM deployment, then download and install it. The best installation method, where possible, is to use the kickstart on a machine connected to the internet.
If you are an experienced Linux user, you can install Linux without the kickstart. However, you will then need to do more work (additional configuration and package installation) when you install the NAM Probe monitoring software.
Step 9. Install NAM monitoring software
When installing NAM Probe monitoring software, you have a number of installation options. Some parameters are mandatory and affect the deployment (for example, licensing options). Check the installation options and run the installation script.
- Configuring NAM Probe communication interface
- Installing the NAM Probe software
- Installation and upgrade options
Step 10. Activate and apply licenses
Use either Online license management or Offline license management to upload and activate the licenses.
-
Apply capacity licenses to every NAM Probe within your deployment.
-
Apply component licenses to every standalone NAM Server within your deployment.
Farm installation: If your deployment uses clusters, apply the component license to the primary NAM Server of each cluster within your deployment.
Every fresh NAM Probe installation includes a 30-day grace license, but it is a good idea to activate the licenses and apply them to the appropriate NAM Probes during deployment.
