Complete report server backup and restore

Complete backup

To back up a report server, back up the repository, the report configuration, and the user-created custom settings.

  1. Perform a manual backup of the Microsoft SQL Server database repository.
The directions to follow depend on the version of Microsoft SQL Server that you are using.
For more information, see Backing up Microsoft SQL Server databases.
Store the backup in a safe place.
  2. Backup the report server configuration.
    1. Log in as an administrator.
    2. Navigate to Tools ► Diagnostics ► Export diagnostic information and collect generated Central_Analysis_Server_hostname_ExportConfig_YYYY_MM_DD__HH_MM_SS.zip file.
    3. Collect XML Export of DMI reports' definitions: Tools ► DMI ► Export/Import and Export all sections.

Complete restore

Use the restore procedure for a clean server reinstallation or as a running server reinstallation. The clean server situation applies, for example, to a total hard drive failure and replacement, while the running server reinstallation to database corruption or configuration failure.

Clean server reinstallations

To restore a report server by reinstalling the server:

  1. Reinstall the operating system including the same updates and patches that were applied to the backed up version.
  2. Manually restore the MS SQL database.
  3. Reinstall the report server software with the database using the identical installation parameters and settings as in the backed up version.
  4. Extract the diagnostic information archive and copy the entire contents of both config and classes\CustomQueries directories to their corresponding location on a report server overwriting any existing files.
  5. Recover your custom reports. Go to Tools ► DMI ► Export/Import and Import reports from specified XML file. You will find your custom report definitions in the exportReports directory of the diagnostic information archive.
  6. Restart the report server.
