Dynatrace automatically detects all applications and microservices deployed in your system and how it uses Couchbase. It provides automatic end-to-end tracing down to the single database statement, Couchbase server metrics and log insights. Dynatrace visualizes application to database dependencies for SQL and noSQL database as well as for cloud databases and self hosted databases. It diagnoses anomalies in real time with AI and pinpoints the root-cause down to the slow performing or erroneous SQL statements. Deep code-level insights combined with cloud native database server monitoring will help you ensure a robust production environment.

• Understand all dependencies of your applications to the database, which database statements are executed and their performance.
• Improve the performance of your application by reducing or optimizing typical database patterns like the 1+N query problem
• Understand the resource impact that your applications have on your database.
• Understand the impact of resource shortages, locks or other database issues have on your application by observing the database server itself.

Set up monitoring

Virtual machine

If your Couchbase is running on a virtual machine directly, you will need to install OneAgent on that virtual machine to get started.

Kubernetes workload

If your Couchbase is running as a workload in Kubernetes, please refer to the Kubernetes deployment start guide.

Openshift workload

If your Couchbase is running as a workload in OpenShift, please refer to the OpenShift deployment start guide.

OpenTelemetry

If you are instrumenting Couchbase with OpenTelemetry then:

1. Ensure that the OneAgent feature "OpenTelemetry Java Instrumentation agent support" is activated to get full tracing and metric insight (OneAgent version 1.237 or newer needed).
2. Instrument the java client with OpenTelemetry.
3. Ensure to store the span attributes.

Extension

Activate the Couchbase extension to get further metrics and events.

Enabling Couchbase monitoring globally

With Couchbase monitoring enabled globally, Dynatrace automatically collects Couchbase metrics whenever a new host running Couchbase is detected in your environment.

1. In the Dynatrace menu, go to Settings.
2. Select Monitoring > Monitored technologies.
3. On the Supported technologies tab, find the Couchbase entry and select in the Edit column to expand the row.
4. Set the User and Password.

The credentials have to work for all Couchbase hosts that you want to monitor. 5. Set the Port. The default port is 8091. 6. Select Save. 7. Turn on the Global monitoring switch for Couchbase. Couchbase monitoring is enabled globally.

Enabling Couchbase monitoring for individual hosts

Dynatrace provides the option of enabling Couchbase monitoring for specific hosts rather than globally.

1. If global Couchbase monitoring is currently switched on, switch it off: go to Settings > Monitoring > Monitored technologies and set the Couchbase switch to the Off position.
2. In the Dynatrace menu, go to Hosts.
3. Find the host you want to configure.

Use the filter at the top of the list to help you locate the host. 4. Select the host to open the host page. 5. Select More (…) > Settings to open the Host settings page. 6. In the Monitored technologies list, find the Couchbase row and turn on the Monitoring switch. Couchbase monitoring is enabled for the selected host.

Log monitoring

Ensure that you have log monitoring enabled to get full log insight.

Monitoring Couchbase clusters

1. In the Dynatrace menu, go to Technologies.
2. Select the Couchbase tile.
3. To view cluster metrics, expand the Details section of the Couchbase process group.
4. Select Process group details.
5. On the Process group details page, select the Technology-specific metrics tab to view relevant cluster charts and metrics.
   • Couchbase cluster (process group) overview pages provide an overview of Couchbase cluster health and performance.
   • This page is also helpful for identifying problematic nodes. Just select a relevant time interval for the timeline, select a node metric from the metric drop list, and compare the values of all nodes in the sortable table.

1. Status - Number of nodes per status (healthy, unhealthy, warmup)
2. Out of memory - Number of OOM and temporary OOM per sec
3. Operations - Number of operations
4. Disk fetches - Disk fetches for memcached buckets
5. RAM overview - Overview of cluster memory
6. Disk overview - Overview of cluster disk usage
7. Swap usage - Cluster swap usage
8. Cache miss rate - Percent of requests not found in the cache
9. Number of ejected items - Number of times that item values were ejected from memory to disk
10. Current items - Number of documents stored on the cluster
11. Buckets - Numbers of buckets per type

Couchbase node monitoring

To access valuable Couchbase node metrics:

1. On your Couchbase Process group details page, select a node from the Process list at the bottom of the page.
2. Select the Couchbase metrics tab.

• RAM usage
• Swap usage
• and Current items
