Product Review:
Visual Studio Magazine: dynaTrace

dynaTrace is equally capable in production and development. You can do "diffs" to compare one run of a transaction against another to see if changes have made the app better or worse -- and where. dynaTrace also integrates with Visual Studio Team System for Test, to facilitate comparing different configurations of the same application. Run results are saved to a central repository for shared access.

dynaTrace is an amazing product that helped me understand how my app worked in real-time. If you can afford it, you should be evaluating dynaTrace.

The OVUM Butler Group: dynaTrace Continuous APM

dynaTrace Continuous APM is an Application Performance Management solution that enables organisations to isolate and fix application performance and scalability issues before they affect production environments. Also, a highly significant differentiator is its ability to operate in the live environment without significant overhead, aiding developers in tracing the causes of problems without having to recreate a case. The costs and delays brought about by software performance difficulties can be a significant competitive disadvantage, particularly as applications are closer than ever to business processes. The dynaTrace solution is capable of serving SOA-based and virtualised IT environments in addition to client-server applications, and it integrates with many ALM and IT management tools to provide holistic visibility into application performance. Organisations can use this product to address performance issues during code development, and performance and load testing, as well as in production. The solution focuses on tracing individual transactions and collects highly granular data from a wide variety of sources to facilitate speedy resolution of issues, unlike many competing solutions which focus on aggregated metrics reporting. The vendor plans to release a toolkit to facilitate integration with broader IT environments, which in OVUM Butler Group’s view would address the limitation that currently this solution can only work for applications operating in Java or .NET environments.

The Pathfinder: Dynatrace Diagnostics: Performance management and troubleshooting combined

Linux or Windows, Java or .Net, Open-Source or commercial application and data base server - you can find almost everything in today’s business applications. That makes the testability and diagnosability of such system extremely difficult. This is what Dynatrace wants to help you overcome.

DynaTrace Diagnostics in application (Joseph Ottinger, Oct. 10 2007, TheServerSide.com)

TSS recently had a discussion with Randy Arseneau, Ted Feyler, and Kathy Harsanyi from DynaTrace, discussing their flagship product, which helps isolate performance problems in Java throughout the entire development cycle. This is a summary of the technology and its value proposition.

Performance Anti-Patterns in Database-Driven Applications (05.01.2009, InfoQ)
Nearly every modern application relies on databases for data persistence. The database access layer is very often responsible for serious performance problems. In the case of database problems most people start searching in the database itself. Appropriate indices and database structures are vital for achieving adequate performance. Often, however, the application layer is responsible for poor performance or scalability problems.

Java Performance Tools: Profiling, Diagnosis and Monitoring (Java Magazin 01/2008)

The market offers different profiling-, diagnosis- and monitoring tools, some of them differ strongly from others concerning the functions. We will introduce some of them in this article, discuss the differences and give you information for your choice.

Gain Complete Visibility into the Complexity of SOA Environments (Java SOA Connection 2008)
SOA, in general, is a new paradigm, so developers and architects have to twist their brains to make it work right — a shift similar to the transition from procedural to object-oriented programming, but on an architecture level. As you will see from the following case study, dynaTrace has created a solution perfectly suited for the increasing complexity brought about by new technologies such as SOA.

Efficient Error Diagnosis (Java Spektrum 1/2007)
Most performance problems in the production environment cannot be precisely reconstructed by developers. As a result error reports often lead to intense conflicts between production and development departments and a performance problem in software frequently becomes a performance problem for the whole company. It does not have to be that way – at least not in the enterprise area of distributed heterogeneous Java SE/EE and .NET applications. New diagnostics software from dynaTrace goes far beyond monitoring and load-testing tools directly to the root cause to diagnose the error precisely.
